Job Description Summary

Job Purpose

The Senior Business Analyst provides strategic business analysis services to STEMCELL’s business partners and IS teams, and leadership within the IS PMO. The focus of this position is to work closely with the business units to gain in-depth understanding of their business strategy, processes, services, roadmap and the context in which their department operates. 

The Senior Business Analyst works consultatively with the business and IS to help identify cost effective opportunities to improve efficiency by means of business process optimization and/or technology. 

The Senior Business Analyst holds themself to a high standard of quality, acting as a champion of the business, and living the STEMCELL values: being innovative, delivering quality, being responsive, maintaining high integrity and a focus on collaboration.

This position is based in Vancouver, BC and reports to the IS PMO Director.

Education & Qualifications: 
  •  At least 5 to 7 years’ experience as a Business Analyst in a multi-disciplinary technology environment or IT projects
  • Minimum BSc/BCom/BCS or related degree. MSc, MBA or PMP is a distinct asset.
  • Demonstrated experience in large-scale projects and initiatives, including Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) implementations
  • Track record of building strong working relationships across an organization and providing relevant, timely, and meaningful information to help leaders make better decisions.
  • A client-focused mindset with proven experience building strong working relationships with executive sponsors, senior leaders and business stakeholders
  • Tangible track record of leveraging strategic analysis and decision support to identify solutions that improved financial and operating performance.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills accompanied by good judgment in order to prioritize, project manage and work independently in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment
  • Exceptional communication skills (written, oral, presentation) and interpersonal skills with proven experience building strong relationships at all levels including ability to influence, motivate and facilitate consensus
  • Desire to work in a high growth, dynamic and young company culture
  • Flexible attitude with a good tolerance for ambiguity  
  • Effective decision making and delegation skills
  • Confident, results-oriented individual; lead by example and demonstrate a ‘can do’ attitude
  • Experience with Agile methodologies; having operated as a product owner is an asset
  • Experience working in a high volume and fast paced environment with overlapping priorities and deliverables.
  • Proven experience successfully managing or mentoring team members on business analysis or business process re-engineering projects
  • Previous experience as a Project Manager is desirable
  • Experience working in Life Sciences or Pharmaceutical industries is an asset
Duties & Responsibilities: 
  • Build relationships with business partners and deeply understand their needs and goals in order to effectively communicate these to the IS project teams in the form of documents such as:
    • business process documentation including recommendations for improvements
    • requirements specifications and user stories
    • acceptance criteria and test plans
    • functional specifications
    • user acceptance test plans and test scenarios
  • Identify, create and facilitate process design changes by conducting business and systems process analysis and design at a complex level; focusing on quality improvement and data management; ensuring data is reliable and valid; developing process improvements or re-engineering and recommending elimination; integrating new systems and processes with existing ones; and partnering with internal and external customers to ensure systems provided meet the long-term business strategies
  • Provide leadership to team members and peers; articulating ideas and viewpoints to senior management, identifying and initiating projects; driving the resolution of issues; and holding self and team accountable for results
  • Support business partners with evaluating IS solution options including driving and guiding solution and vendor selections through an RFP/RFI/RFQ.
  • Support the IS PMO by defining best practices, and templates for business requirements and process analysis.
  • Continually seek opportunities to increase customer satisfaction and deepen client relationships.
  • Generate enthusiasm among team members.   Provide mentorship and guidance to other team members.
  • Proactively seek opportunities to serve in leadership roles.
  • Challenge others to develop as leaders while serving as a role model.
  • Manage the process of innovative change.
  • Work closely with our business partners to develop business cases and support project viability and priority assessments for project and initiative requests.  Assist with costs estimation, benefits analysis, as well as roadmap / implementation strategy definition. Demonstrate solid judgement in cost/benefit analysis.  
  • Collaborate closely with developers to implement the requirements, provide necessary guidance to testers during QA process
  • For agile projects, act as the product owner, and collaborate with the team to articulate user stories and acceptance criteria, holding the team to a high level of quality through challenging assumptions and supporting the sprint demos.
  • Ensure metrics based decision making and help prepare and implement KPIs.
  • Demonstrate up-to-date expertise in Information Systems and apply this to the development, execution and improvement of action plans by providing advice and guidance to others in the application of information and best practices
  • Occasionally lead small to midsize projects, or assist IS project managers on larger more complex projects.; completing and updating project documentation; managing project scope; adjusting schedules when necessary; determining daily priorities; ensuring efficient and on-time delivery of project tasks and milestones; following proper escalation paths; and managing customer and supplier relationships
  • Manage customer relationships and expectations by developing a communication process to keep our stakeholders up-to-date on project results.  Understand and negotiate needs and expectations of multiple stakeholders.
